Finally took the plunge and installed Oracle Virtual box on my Lenovo AIO/I7/

I use VMware as it seems to give me more choices in how the VM is hosted.
Most of the time, the VMDK (equivalent of a VHD but with more capabilities like larger size, snapshots, etc.) resides on a SAN accessed by my ESXi server. This lets me run the VMs that are hosted, there, from any machine (regardless of client OS) with just the UI residing on client.
If I'm interested in performance, then I can reference the VMDK directly (SAN also supports SMB and NFS shares) in VMware on the client. Or, copy the VMDK onto a local machine for the best performance (assuming the local machine has more resources than the ESXi server)
Some care required if you're trying to run a single VMDK in multiple instances.
