IF this is the wrong place to post this , please forgive. I have a basic stamp circuit set up to drive a small low volt motor salvaged from DVCPRO tape machine. Programming is correct but the motor will not run. I have checked I/O pin and have 5 volt on the pin but no motor turn. I think I am looking at a current problem. What is the smallest component way to correct problem? Andy

By saying you have 5V on the pin I assume it is connected to the motor as a load to ground. If the motor is rated 5 VDC it should run, but apparently it is an open circuit, because a PIC's output voltage will drop to 3 or 4 volts with only about 10 mA current. Check to see at what voltage the motor will run, and then use a driver circuit as proposed by ehsjr. If the motor will run on about 3-4 VDC you can use an emitter follower which won't need the base resistor. Make sure you add the diode to absorb counter EMF when the motor slows down and becomes a generator.
If it is a stepper motor it will have at least 4 leads and will require bridge drivers.
