generators are inherently high impedance, you can't make any more current with one than your field current and the turns ratio from rotor to stator allow. think of them as being like current transformers.

(I'm assuming wound field instead of PM - but you get the same sort of effect either way)

Every day 1 kW x 24 h = 24 kWh would be available to charge the car battery..

While some Teslas might have battery capacity up to 100 kWh, most EVs have battery capacity of 20 - 50 kWh and in many cases a typical commuter doesn't have to fully charge the car every day.

A 24 kWh daily charge would be sufficient in most cases, so 1 kW average power / car is OK.

And just how would that electricity find its way to Germany? Just how big would the 3000 km long interconnectors have to be? What voltage and current would they have to carry? Where is the power going to come from at night? Germany's power generation capacity is about 200GW at present (it generates about 600TWh).

If it focussed the need for anything, it would be the need for room temperature superconductors, or at least those which would be practical in a 3000km cable at somewhat higher than liquid helium temperatures.

Angela Merkel as "scared" is decidedly improbable. Getting rid of nuclear plants played well with the German population. All of them were downwind of Chernobyl.

Angela Merkel got to the top because she was clever, and she has stayed there by being clever. She's certainly not any kind of token woman.

One problem might be solved, but you open up a whole range of potential problems. Nuclear advocates are very glib about getting rid of nuclear waste, but we've been accumulating it for more than half a century now and there isn't one long term nuclear repository anywhere, and since long term means about 100,000 years, fudging the issue is irresponsible idiocy.

None of them has a long term repository for nuclear waste.

Not what the ice core data says. Nor what Fourier had worked out in 1822. The "greenhouse effect" keeps the earth surface a lot warmer than the -18C you'd get without the insulating effect of the atmosphere.

Water vapour is the most important greenhouse gas, but it equilibrates with the oceans within about three weeks. Carbon dioxide takes about 800 years to equilibrate, so we can screw up the planetary temperature for quite a while. if we burn enough fossil carbon.

That was the DESERTEC plan for more than a decade ago. At that time CSP plants were cheaper than PV panels.

An HVDC cable with up to 1000 kV and a few thousand Amperes can carry a few GW of power each. If the energy is "free" and the dissipated heat losses will be handled by the sea water,so you can overload the cables quite significantly. Quite a few cables would be required, but not a huge number.

In a CSP plant a fluid is heated by concentrated sun beams and the fluid then turns a turbine and a generator. Some hot fluid can be stored during the evening into tanks and then run it through the turbine at night.

It should be also noted that the electric consumption is lower at night. It makes perfectly sense to build solar production capabilities corresponding to the day/night consumption difference. Building more solar power will require special tricks e.g. with battery or other storage for the night.

This was before the Arab Spring :-). After that, it would be quite risky to make large investments in North Africa.

Some 'high temperature' superconductors work at liquid nitrogen temperatures.

Superconducting cables require a quite a lot cooling power to run in order to remove the heat entering from the environment into the conductor itself. Multiple stage cooling is needed, consuming a lot of electricity.

My estimate is that at least 10 GW of electricity should be transferred in the cable, so that the percentage of cooling power is insignificant.

That would be true if you charge it with 1 kW, but since you have no time driving around that day, there would not be much point in charging it in the first place :-)

However with a 2 kW (10 A @ 230 V) the charging time would be 12 hours and you can drive around the remaining 12 hours, if the 24 kWh charge is sufficient.

At 24 kW (3x32 A mains connection), the charging time would be one hour and you would have 23 hours to drive around.

The insanity is all Phil's. Cars typically spend 95% of their time parked, and when electric cars get more popular you are going to be able to charge then pretty much anywhere where you'd want to park them. 5% of 24 hours is a bit under and hour and quarter. Electric cars typically use about 15kWh to cover 100km, and it is hard to get that far in an hour if you aren't on a motorway. One kilowatt is plenty to charge up a a parked car

It appears that losses are in area of 1.6% per 1000km. I underestimated the cable length - it's more like 4000km. That would account for over 6% loss, which is appreciable. Less than 1000km would be under water; the rest would be above ground, half of which would be in a very hot climate. Supergrids of 765kV+ are already in use, so it's not new tech, but are in usually considerably cooler climates. Interestingly, according to this 2005 paper

, higher voltage grids (above 1MV) were already being operated at a lower voltage because of a decline in load growth, often down to 500kV. Losses at that voltage would be considerably higher.

According to the interconnector wiki "The longest interconnection as of

2016 was the undersea NorNed link between Norway and the Netherlands, spanning nearly 600 km and delivering 700 MW of high voltage direct current power". You'd be looking at 200+ cables of around twice that length for an Africa-Europe connector.

It's not impossible, but would require a sustained technical effort.

Controlling terrorism threats to a supergrid over 2000km long would be a very difficult challenge. It would be very expensive at the start, but perhaps cheaper in the long run, to bury the cable at least 10m underground. That would make damage caused by terrorism much more unlikely.

I came across am interesting idea, which used liquid hydrogen to cool the cables to superconducting temperatures. The cable is laid in pipes containing the liquid hydrogen which would be used as a movable liquid fuel for use in hydrogen-powered cars, etc, so sort of killing two birds with one stone. But it might kill more than two birds if the pipe ruptured...
