Mains power voltage drop to reduce usage?

One maintenence technique: all the pipe joints were welded, to contain steam at numbers like 1500F and 1500 PSI. That sort of steam is corrosive and will literally dissolve steel. Once in a while a welded pipe seam would develop a pinhole, which might or might not be audible.

To detect such a leak, one would get a long broomstick and wave it around all the welded joints. The indication of a leak is that the invisible steam jet would cut off the end of the stick. It would cut a person in half too.

Diesels are immensely easier to maintain compared to high-pressure steam.

Low pressure steam and pistons, like on Liberty ships, were fairly simple and easy to maintain, but very inefficient.

The Titanic was a turbine but parts of the movie were filmed on the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, our local ancient Liberty ship that still goes out into the Bay now and then. The pistons are very dramatic compared to a turbine casing.

WTF? Why do they need your readings that often?!

There was never any need for smart meters. What a waste (economically and environmentally) making all that new equipment.

Ah, I'm not familiar with LR44. Only the AAA/AA/C/D series, PP3, and the CR series. Clocks (at least the proper ones with moving hands) are usually AA.

Was it as heavy as my Fed 4?

that's a solar panel for the manual light meter, no batteries required. You then adjusted some dials to match the light meter pointer with a sensible aperture and shutter speed, then made an adjustment for the slightly busted solar cell from dropping it earlier. Then realised the subject had wandered off.

Obviously the people that held the purses did not think like you, thus you are mistaken.

At a lower voltage: 1.2 vs 1.5. That's enough to make the LCD readout of a clock nearly unreadable, too dim. On some devices, it triggers the low battery warning.

I know, I use rechargeables.

Just read reviews. Alkaline is alkaline. NiMH and LiIon, shoddy workmanship galore - Panasonic 100% of what it says on the tin. Samsung 80%. Any Chinese s*it like Trustfire or anything with the word fire in it, 20%. I've tested all these by charging and discharging through a torch. Best to weigh the battery, when you get ripped off, they're much lighter!

That's not why they made them. It's environmental bullshit to encourage us to use less power. How ridiculous, we use what we want or need to, until the bill is too high, then we use less. Seeing it in realtime is pointless.

I haven't seen a device that can't handle the lower voltage for about 15 years. And that was a mechanical clock. F****ng terrible on any kind of battery, as it slowed down as the voltage changed.

When you're old, a slow clock is your friend :-).

Clocks are for the government to keep everyone doing things correctly and on time. I find it easier to do things when you want to. Sometimes I'll go to bed in the afternoon and get up in the middle of the night.

I put two CPU fans in my fridge freezer (fridge section). It was somehow creating 13C at the top and 1C at the bottom. It works by air blowing from the freezer section, I can't see how it could be doing that badly, or how the laws of physics permit such a huge temperature differential.

That's supposed to happen. That's where the cold comes from, it has to be less than the food to be able to cool the food.

If the thermostat was keeping it on too long, that's exactly what would happen.

That would result in nowhere near enough cooling.
