I am impressed by this camera, seeing in the dark

I am impressed by this camera:

This is in total room darkness, except for some LEDs on equipment, monitor light dimmed to contrast 0 and brightness 0, Camera gain is not even at maximum, noise reduction is maximum. That to the right is a white wall, but to the normal eye you can hardly even see it, after 15 minutes getting used to darkness. There seems to be light coming in through the curtains, only light is a street light far away, sky is cloudy, will shoot some stars when it is clear. Camera normally goes to BW at low light, but I forced color on to see what it looked like.

Those Sony sensors are good, but for the equivalence to night vision, you want the monochrome version, not color. The color matrix kills a lot of the light. The B&W version will do NIR, plus is 10x more sensitive.

The color camera going to B&W is just signal processing. The color matrix can't be removed. Better to buy a monochrome in the first place.

If you are doing ebay, just watch for the high sensitivity Watec monochrome cameras. Often they come with the visible light blocking R72 filter, removable of course. Pair it with a f1.3 or f1.4 lens. Avoid the F1 and most F1.2 lenses since they are not sharp. I have the Rainbow F1.0 lens you often see on ebay. I found it at a surplus shop for about

1/4th the ebay price. They thought it didn't work, but didn't realize it had a close-up lens on it.

People don't realize that the focal ratio of the lens is a purely mechanical number. It does not necessarily relate to the amount of light coming out of the lens. Prime lenses let more light through than zooms with the same focal ratio.

Probably not good for a drone due to weight, but those old M42 screw mount lenses plus the M42 to C adapter work great. The M42 lens is designed for film rather than video, so they have to be sharp. There is always a large selection of Pentax takumar 50mm M42 on ebay. Look for completed sales because they often ask ridiculous prices for the lens.

I assume you have the VLC (videolan) player. It can be set up for motion blur, but really what it is doing is averaging frames. If you use that feature, you can average out the noise.
