Gen HV spike audio

What is the simplest, most accessible way to generate a 300-400V spike, continuously adjustable within the frequency range of 200Hz to

2KHz? I am doing exps with powering a 20W industrial gas lamp.

** Do the spikes need to be all of one polarity ?

If bi-polar spikes are OK, then try driving a small mains transformer connected in reverse sense to normal ( say 12 volt to 240 volt ) with a differentiated square wave that is varied between 100 Hz and 1 kHz.

You will need an audio amp like the TDA3020, a 555 to generate the square waves and coupling cap chosen to get the right spike energy.
