Do you have any idea how big it is. I must admit I'm rather surprised that to save a few (hundred?) pounds they used such a known 'touchy' battery.

It's a Yuasa battery and the charge controller is by Thales. A 60 some odd pounds something like 16 x 13 x 10 inches IIRC. May be a special run just for Boeing and not a stock product.

Which airframe battery is it? 20 minute Hydraulic backup? Starting? Avionics?

The 787 doesn't have any hydraulics, according to news releases, it is totally electric.

Emergency instruments and lighting, and starts the APU, which probably takes a lot of peak power.

You spelled "touchy" wrong. It's Torchy. :(

Well they've all been grounded so the question is moot for the present. I don't see how they can continue to use this battery, will probably have to retrofit an NiMH.

The Hamilton-Sundstrand APU for this aircraft is absolutely critical in the event of power loss in flight. It is the key piece that gets them ETOPS ce rtification without which the 787 would not be allowed the more fuel saving flight routes, among other things. How much of a drain on the batteries is starting the APU is what I want to know if the manufacturer's news release brags about a 75 minute fast charge time??? I hope this thing glides well.

HS is famous for making ram air turbines, "the thing you never want to see used." Maybe the 787 doesn't have a RAT; the battery starts quicker and is lighter.

HS is a good customer of ours. They are very competant. Lots of businesses have lots of doofusses, but the aerospace companies don't.

I'd expect the APU to start up in seconds; it's just a tiny gas turbine. But I bet it needs a lot of power to start.

Yes, but is it the battery, or the electronics?

News report I saw said they went with the LiIon because it could be charged quickly. Same reason I read that Ford is trying to use them.
