Yes wmv is nice, and plays almost everywhere these days, I have a lot of DivX-4 stuff, but as computers got more powerful I use mpeg2 now for quality stuff, and H264 for the recordings from the security camera:

That camera also produces a series of jpegs... at 2fps in my case :-) That is enough for security. It has an Ethernet interface, even works on the eeepC, or from wherever in the world. Lots of downloads for the soft I wrote for it (the windows soft never worked for me). Nice to be able to see if your house is still there from wherever you are.

Yes, CFs have high transfer rates and they are easy to interface.

However I have recently burned with the poor reliability of the modern CF cards of high volume (> 1GB). The bad blocks will be there almost for sure, and the amount of the bads will grow up to hundreds of megabytes. The bigger is the card, the less reliable it is! The result is rather disappointing. We have to run an extensive test for every card for the infant mortality of cells, and after that it seems to be working fine. I've already thought of duplicating all of the data on one card or making something like RAID array...

you can put lots of stuff in a chip package, I've worked on stuff with an RF chip on top of a baseband controller with balun and decoupling inside too, and flash on top of MCU. I'm not sure how many can actually do such things. not sure if you can do chip to chip bonding of need to go via a substrate/pcb which may also be needed if you can't get the pinouts to fit. And if you want fast parallel interface to flash it gets to be _alot_ of pins

I don't think so. Rotating media vs flash is a different equation for archival media.

Contacts and wirebonds are not quite the same as package pins. Compound flip chip may be a workable answer.

I am not really that it is a real issue. Just make it look like an automatic drive mapping at boot.

That depends. Simply do the math, most people have maybe less then 30 hours TV recorded. (in the old days 10 VHS cassettes). For 200 Euro you buy 20 8GB sticks makes 60 hours of digital TV storage.
