We're just finishing fixing up a house in Scituate, getting ready to sell it. It took four months to get the permits for the mandatory septic tank replacement, which will cost about $50K. We had to repair the nasty oil burner, and fill the tank (fuel oil costs more than gasoline these days) and keep it going so the pipes wouldn't freeze.
But the trees changing color are nice, and the clam rolls, and the Boston Cream pie. You could do a lot worse, but then you could do better, too.

I am considering emigration though it seems a tiresome and risky process. I'd need a work visa, support money till I get employment . How much reserve cash is necessary? Which is the best place to emigrate to? Europe or US? I have connections in Europe (UK, Denmark and Italy) but no serious links in the US apart from a couple of girls. I hear though that the employment situation in Europe is grim. What cities in US/Europe? Should I seek political asylum? Still digging for the best answers to these questions.

Your memory doesn't seem to stretch back to Enron "gaming" the California electricity distribution network to push your power prices through the roof. That was simple theft.
And Enron's large donations to Dubbya's electtion expenses bought them so much "access" that they got their preferred appointees to regulate electricity distribution. That's corruption.

Yes, but the insane rules that made it possible, nay unavoidable, were established by the California legislature. Like, for instance, forbidding utilities to make advantageous long-term fuel contracts, and having daily energy price auctions in which *all* bidders were paid the *maximum bid* amount.

Let Senator Cantwell summarize it for you:-) The whole bunch are Enron lackeys:

I guess Ken Rice, the Fastow's, Jamie Olis, Dan Bayly, Ben Glisan... on and on... and Lay and Skilling this January should be so relieved that the investigation hasn't been a "priority" ?:-)
