Electronic variator for mini drill

Hi all



I've got a mini drill powered by a 12V transformer. Problem is that it is an On/Off drill, no variation in the power applied to it. I'm looking for leads on what to look for in order to build an electronic variator system. I already know about variable voltage regulators, but they dissipate the difference into heat, which is not really desirable. Any help greatly appreciated

Ideal: negative impedance variable v supply giving constant drill speed regardless of loading.

Next best: variable v supply

Quick dirty n cheap: variable resistor eg old sewing machine footpedal diodes and multiposition switch

I'd use PWM. A 555 in astable mode with a potmeter to vary the dutycycle and a (darlington) power transistor to drive the drill.

Thanks, that's what I'm considering as well, though using a MOSFET (more current, less dissipation)
