DTE<->DTE connection through RS232C(V.24)

Hello

I'm working on a networking equipment box project which has 3x V.24 ports. In routine use , this box will comm. with 3 different USART devices. (DTEDCE configuration)

But customer wants to connect two of our boxes to each other without the need of a different cable and connector. (DTEDTE configuration)

If we were allowed to use null modem cable , there will be no problem but since we are not allowed we must somehow change the pin assignments.

Has any of you faced this kind of problem ? and what action you take ?

Regards..

:) Thanks , it's patented

I have another question if you would mind..

Who generates the clocking signals in sync. communication(say it's SDLC/HDLC) What I mean is , if i'm the DTE device , should I expect TXCLOCK and RXCLOCK from DCE device ? And what would be the connection like ? DTE DCE

------- ------- TXCLKRXCLK RXCLKTXCLK

or

DTE DCE

------- ------- TXCLKTXCLK RXCLKRXCLK

There is a patent for such a simple invention? I'm sure there is prior art, because the patent is from 1990.

A simple solution would be to buy a DPDT switch and push it, if it doesn't work.

if the interface has no hardware handshaking, the time-honored method was to pull out the soldering iron and swap 2 & 3. ;-)

Sorry, I don't know offhand. There's some HLDC in a system I'm working on at the moment, but I'm not sure about the nomenclature.

Well, be sure not to tell the teacher that "change pin assignments" is equal to "null modem". ;-)

Do you know any SCC which can configure it's pins internally ? for example in one configuration TX(2nd pin) but in the other exchanged with RX(3rd pin).? Thanks

Quite a few of the old terminals, have DIP switches which allow their ports to be setup as DCE, or DTE, to deal with this. Some (probably the easiest route), had dual RS232 connectors, one male, and one female, with the corresponding wiring. However the cost, genrally means it is easier to deal with the few odd occassions, by using a converter plug, or cable (remember you can get null-modems, in a 1:1 plug assembly, in some cases only about 1/2" long).

Best Wishes
