Don Lancaster was right about patents

I've had too many occasions where I had to actually take over and write appeals and stuff myself which were then verbatim filed. Once an attorney even said "Joerg, this makes no sense, I can't support doing that". So I did it myself and prevailed (the lawyer was quite blown away when I faxed it over). That caused a wee ding in my trust in the legal profession.

Nothing to laugh, sounds very technical. But I am not an expert in cache memory systems.

Well, IBM is a great company to work for. My pa says so and he ought to know. Don't think it's much different in consulting. While I typically reserve the right to use and market inventions outside my clients business area they own the rights for their turf. After all, they pay me for the work. And most of it is so special that it's not useful outside their markets. Except for the competition but that's a big no-no.

It woud be profit by litigation of the "abusers".

My latest joust with the "powers that be"...

It's been an annual fight here with the Home Owner's Association to get them to trim a "big-ass" tree that overhangs my property (from the Mountain Preserve, which the HOA is responsible for maintaining).

Each year, after some harsh words, they'd finally come and trim it.

This year "the new punk in-charge" of maintenance decided they'd just cut it down.

Within one hour I had rounded up...

I also sent them a picture of the pair of great horned owls who live there in the winter.

The HOA decided suddenly that they could trim the tree after all.

They sent a crew of Mexicans out with instructions to trim it exactly to my specifications.

And they sent "the new punk in-charge" to make sure it happened.

What was funny, nearly in tears, he said, "You called me a _cretin_ in the newspaper" ;-)

Haven't called anyone names but the print media is basically how we stopped a nasty threat from our local airport. No attorneys needed, I drafted an attorney style letter myself and that shook the board up pretty good. They became extremely friendly thereafter ;-)

I made precisely *one dollar* from my patent at work, paid in cash. It paid for half a banana muffin for morning tea. Yummy, or at least half of it was.

The chlosteral in the muffin is likely to rack up humongous medical costs.

This is typical of the patent system.

There is NO WAY that you profited from the patent system by a whole dollar.

It simply NEVER happens to individuals and small scale startups.

My association with the Sierra Club - I joined the club for a couple of years so I could get the magazine and discounts on their calendars. A few years after that, I was in a jury pool for a civil trial where the defendant was a large forest products company from the Northwest. One of the questions on the screening questionaire was "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Sierra Club?" All those who answered in the affirmative were asked a few more questions, and then released from the pool, except me. That moved me up from the front row waiting list into jury seat #7.
