There are probably equivalent outfits in the States. They make CHEAP prototype PCB's, eg 4 layer no problem. You need to supply a gerber file / drill drawing but some cheap packages will do that. The point is that you're talking maybe 10 to 40 euros per PCB. The trick they use is to make a biscuit with several peoples' PCB's on them, thus the overheads are shared. We used them for the last few years and were stunned at the prices. Given the availability of cheap PCB's like this, of decent quality, do you really want to rely on hand made amateur circuit boards? I no longer attempt to make prototypes with SM components without a PCB. I add lots of extra test points to such a prototype in case my circuit's wrong, and I do a lot of checking against datasheets etc before committing to PCB, but the added reliability of decent PCB's when dealing with sub-millimetre pitch SM devices is worth a few euros. How much is your time worth?
