I think there is going to be a lot of sad faces around here if they prove that it does work with products on the market.

I am not saying it does or does not however, I would rather sit back and let it blossom into what ever it is going to be and we'll go from there.

Not normally, no. If the seller has another choice, no. Something that violates known laws of physics gets more scrutiny, however.

Fleischmann-Pons cold-fusion used a palladium substrate. Natural palladium is a mixture of roughly equal parts of Pd-105, Pd-106 and Pd-108, with abou t half as much each of Pd-105 and Pd-110.

If any of the palladium isotopes could be persuade to emit a alpha particle , you'd end up with ruthenium, would probably be exothermic, at least for s ome of the isotopes.

If palladium (atomic number 46) really did capture a deutron it would becom e silver (atomic number 47) - but this would be endothermic and could only happen - by tunneling - if the new silver nucleus promptly emitted an alpha particle to leave rhodium (atomic number 45). This could be exothermic for some of the isotopes.

Some isotopes of rhodium are unstable and beta-decay to palladium, so we mi ght have an ostensibly catalytic mechanism, though we'd be transmuting heav ier isotopes of palladium to lighter isotopes in the process, effectively u sing up the palladium.

I don't imagine that any of this is actually happening, but there's clearly room for a few more scams.

"Cold fusion" doesn't actually violate any known law of physics. It does re quire creative energy accounting to make it work, and there are legitimate doubts about that kind of energy accounting. It certainly requires a hither to unknown mode of quantum mechanical tunneling to by-pass what looks - to us, now - to be a remarkably high energy barrier.

If it worked, the barrier would turn out to be lower. It doesn't seem to wo rk.

Yes, I am. If the gain is 6 at the kilowatt level, it ain't rocket science. Pour in a gallon of water and boil it off. If you can't measure that within a factor of six, you ain't trying hard enough.

Of course, better metrology would help. I'd add a dime-store thermometer and a watch with at least a minute hand.

The point here is that anybody wishing to demonstrate a real, working model would have no trouble demonstrating it conclusively on a desk-sized apparatus. Without disclosing what's inside the desk.

The reason for all the secrecy and obfuscation is that it doesn't work IMHO.

Enough of this...I gotta get back to working on my water-car. Success is just over the horizon. ;-)

The thing clearly stinks like the free energy scam that it is.

LENR is theoretically possible for certain muon catalysed fusion reactions, but producing the muons is far too expensive to make it a realistic proposition. It was the real physics work on muon catalysed cold fusions that prompted Feischmann & Pons (both highly respected electrochemists) to publish prematurely with their dodgy calorimetry.

You could not buy palladium or heavy water for love nor money for months afterwards and every lab on the planet had a go at it.

They at least published details of their discovery so that researchers the world over could try to reproduce it. If there was any kind of real invention in LENR they could get a patent on it, publish and then license it. Thankfully today even USPTO is not dumb enough to grant patents on unsupported scams like LENR and perpetual motion machines.

LENR shares more in common with tampering with your electric meter to prevent it from reading correct power usage than with real physics.

I certainly agree but it seems this stuff isn't as easy as it appears. It kept every one busy (dis)proving CNF for a couple years.

Today is a day off. 2-1/2 inches of snow have completely closed down the city. It's not supposed to get above freezing until Friday, so I may get the whole week off. Saturday and Sunday will be close to 70F, so it'll all be gone for the weekend. ;-)

It's a matter of scale. P&F were measuring tiny amounts of energy. Rossi built a boxcar full of the stuff and put out massive amounts of energy. If it's putting out a kilowatt, you can measure it with very simple equipment. Remember, we're not talking about measuring nanowatts on the head of a pin. A Kilowatt is a BIG number. And if it takes 1/6 of that as input, I've got a dozen gadgets that can measure that with precision better than 1/6.

At that level, you don't need any test equipment that you can't buy at the local hardware store to prove the concept.

Certainly not at first. They were saying that they had trouble keeping the water in the vessel.

You do have to differentiate it from *ALL* input and chemical sources.

That's exactly why I stated the test the way I did. If you weigh the thing and use your best known technology to predict how much energy you could get out of the most energetic source known of that mass, you include all that.

Takes longer to run the test, but you don't have to look inside the box. That solves all the patent issues. Give me the weight. I'll boil some water and measure the inputs. It's not rocket science.

Once you know it works, you can start worrying about mass production issues.

There's no way that Rossi would sell something worth billions and billions for $11M if he is confident that it works. One thing Rossi ain't is that stupid.
