Charger

Hi All,

I would like to build a nice general purpose Li-ion/gel charger for 1.5V batteries/cells thru 12V auto gels. Is there a SoC that will do this? Monitoring of overheating and/or overcharging a must have! :-)

Well there are no 1.5v li-ions afaik, and automotive 12v batteries are lead acid, so you're kinda out of luck.

System-on-a-chip for power output and AC input? Not likely; off-the-shelf, though, is achievable, within limits. The recharge of a clock battery and a forklift battery don't really benefit from similar hardware.

There are laboratory power supplies that can be set for charge current and terminal voltage, and you can combine one of those with a time switch to make a pretty good charge-cycle control. A thermal alarm, though, requires some kind of knowledge of the 'extra' pins on a complex battery system, or some way to attach a thermal sensor, and those aren't general-purpose items.

If you only want one, go to a hobby store and buy what you want off the shelf.

DIY is trivial in concept, but by the time you make the box to put it in and program the user interface, you'll have spent as much money and have something that is cumbersome and unreliable. The things you know about are not an issue. It's the stuff you don't know about that will bite you in the ass...or set you on fire. A failed charger is the least of your worries. Make sure your fire insurance is paid up. If you had the experience/knowledge to do it right the first time, you wouldn't be asking the question that way.

20 years ago, I nearly lost an eye when a NiMH blew up in my face. And I knew exactly what I was doing...or so I thought...
