I just ordered a 10W LED bicycle light that comes with a Li-Ion pack and it always leaves an iffy feeling charging those unattended (must happen after every ride). So I'll be looking at RC-hobby solutions later. Although, supposedly it has happened that model aircraft have come out of the sky with a blazing fire trail.
In my case the battery also needs to be somewhat safe in a crash because this is for a mountain bike.

you can get "safety bags" and boxes for charging
afaict tell LiFePo4 should be much safer than LiPo. They are a little lower voltage and capacity but they should keep their capacity longer

I like to ride with daytime lights while on roads and on trails I keep the rear light in flash mode. So the rescue guys would find me if I crash real bad out in the hinterlands. If there's dirt bikers I even keep the front light on because those guys never have lights and so they have to see me first.
No combustion stuff allowed on them trails here.
Generally that happens because someone's been mistreating their batteries. So, don't do that.
If you hit a brick wall, light first, at over fifty miles per hour, your battery bursting into flame will probably be the least of your worries. It almost certainly won't make your day worse, although it would mean that when you do wake up it's to a longer and more painful recovery.
That would work. Or the middle of a patio floor. It kind of depends on how big of cells you're charging -- smaller batteries means less energy when things burst into flame.
All the RC folks I've met baby their batteries, just like they do with their aircraft. They have to because their investment is typically in the high four digits.
It's not about me, it's about not causing a forest fire. For example, one item that these light "systems" usually do not have is a fuse.
So far the worst wham-bam style crash I had was at 20mph on a dirt/rock trail. Me against a Manzanita tree and the Manzanita won. It was surprisingly forceful. Good mountain bikes are almost built like tanks but it still put a gash into one of the cast-aluminum brake fluid reservoirs.
It'll be between 30 and 80 watt-hours, set up as a concoction of numerous 18650 cells.
Have you considered putting the battery inside the seat tube (or down tube)?

Tough with newer mountain bikes because there is no access from the top anymore. But one option is the steerer even though I'll have to some day run an allthread through there because this "modern" concept of threadless steerers is a bad design.
Right now I have it strapped behind the seat tube where it is at least protected from the worst. However, for my kind of rides I need a more serious battery, one that can power a 10W LED for 5h. Mainly so dirt bikers see me because most of those guys don't even have headlights so I won't see them. I was quite impresed with the Chinese charger that came in the package. It shuts down at 8.35V.
