The only one dumber than Grayson (Johnson, GA, Mr. Guam is going to tip over) apparently did survive, though.
A better impedance match would improve things, but the root problem is that them old headphones were built for sensitivity, and the new headphones were built for good sound.
That having been said, there was a thread on this topic here a while back, and one of the suggestions was to shop around for earbuds with high advertised sensitivity, and use a step-down transformer from the crystal set to run them. You won't get the same performance you'd get if you hand-built a pair of headphones from scratch using iron foil and the best magnet wire you could find, but you'd at least to pretty good.
