On the 11801, I have replaced the stackup of the Dallas Smart Socket + sram with this:

which just plugs in. It has a lot more battery inside than the Dallas thing.

I wonder if a full calibration is really necessary? If the adjustments have not changed, then why mess with them.

The calibration procedures that may have to be performed after changing the battery backed ram are listed under "AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION CONSTANTS, HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL GAIN, CENTERING, AND TRANSIENT RESPONSE ADJUSTMENTS". This starts on page 208 of the service manual that I have.

These are CAL 01, 02, 03, 06, 07, and 09. These requires the following equipment:

Calibration Generator (Item 3) Time-Mark Generator (Item 6) Oscilloscope (Item 7)

50 ohm BNC Cable (Item 10) Dual-Input Coupler (Item 11) 5X Attenuator (Item 17) Digital Multimeter (DMM) (Item 19) Alignment Tool (Item 20) Tunnel Diode Pulser (Item 23)

Presumably most of the items can be subsituted with equipment you may have around the lab.

The CAL 06-VERTICAL TRANSIENT RESPONSE is an adjustment procedure. Nothing is stored in ram, so it should not be affected. But good to check anyway.

So simply changing the battery-backed ram should not require a full recalibration, unless you want to do it for other reasons.

Re: Rigol 1052E mod. Bruce do you have a link or other info on this mod? I saw an eev blog where Dave hacked the software and got a 100 MHz BW. (Which didn't really interest me since we have 200 MHz TEK.) But ~450 MHz might come in useful one day.

If the battery in the existing ram dies, you need to do the full calibration. The scope probably needs it anyway.

Also, for the 2467, there is a setting in the calibration process to lengthen the display time. Use Exerciser 09 to extend the display time.

Why? If the adjustments do not store data, what's the point? If the scope was working satisfactorily why bother? It's not as if you need NIST certification to check the logic level on a 74AC00.

While searching for the info, I came across this tidbit that C1115 and C1132 are transposed on the 2465B layoput. One is 250uF/20V vs 10uF/160V. If you follow the manual, you will blow the cap and some other parts:

The parts list shows C1115 as 250uF, 20V, and C1132 as 10uF, 160V, on page

359.

...and not made by flaky Dallas/Maxim.
