Q is more important as k gets smaller, because of the growing energy level you need to sustain in the transmit coil to get enough power across. If k=1, there is no point in resonating anything at all. Coil losses are still an issue at k->1, of course, but not nearly as much as at low k.

I can imagine a wedding ring getting much more uncomfortable than usual.
Could be unusual situations with conductive stuff like swarf kicking around as you say- all gems waiting to be discovered.
