That is not true if the amp is capable of driving a 4 ohm load. The specs on my Onkio are:
70 W/Ch into 8 ohms 90 W/Ch into 4 OhmsHe could get around the whole problem by buying 2 pairs of speakers, and having 2 in series for each channel. Still, there is the question of what's the point? To get hi-fi sound, he would have to add a crossover network and high frequency speakers. Everything would depend on the desighn of the cabinet. Probably better off buying packaged speakers.

Of interest is their reference to "RMS Power".
Maybe I am missing something, but to supply 6 kW of power, with 12 kW peaks, a car would need an alternator approximately the size of a 5 gallon plastic bucket.

And since the amp is a voltage source, if the current 8 ohm speakers are matched to the receiver, replacing them with 4 ohm speakers will result in twice the current for the same voltage. Most receiver amp outputs aren't safely current limited, so doubling the current may smoke the output transistors when he cranks it up to "10", even if the speakers can handle the power.
The fellow shopper had some good advice -- swapping out 8 ohm speakers with 4 or 2 ohm speakers can be harmful to the amp unless you know what you're doing.
If the OP had specified the model of his Onkyo home receiver... but I guess not.

Your receiver can happily power an 8-ohm speaker. At the same voltage, a 4 ohm speaker will draw twice as much current. If your amp can't deliver that, it might clip, which will muck up the sound, how much depending on how hard it clips.
I can't imagine why you'd want to spend that kind of money on speakers whose purpose in life is to annoy everyone in the neighborhood. Be sure and contain the noise within your own walls. My personal recommendation would be to look into more efficient enclosures - I've seen bass reflex enclosures that could clear the room with an 8" speaker, and about a watt or two of actual RMS power going to them. The guy had used the equivalent of a 2N2219 and 2N2905 for his outputs. the whole power amp was about 4" square. ;-)

That kind of money?? $40 for a pair too much??
I have 2 -10 inchers in my truck. I do pretty good with my stealth system in my Datsun I have 4- 6 1/2 inchers hidden from sight. Sounds pretty good and pumps some bass also. I spent over a thousand dollars when I did my 93 Dakota, and about 80 hours labor getting it right. The trucks lound but not really a bass thumper.

The truth, they probably don't have much low bass in a large room. The tweeters will probably drive your ears to hurt, and just sound like $40 worth of speakers. When people try to drive home amplifiers hard or use them for DJ, you put a fan blowing through the chassis, and they will withstand much more abuse this way.

I doubt that the long term 'rms' rating is > 1500W.

They talk of a recommended amplifier size of 3-6 kW. Since there is dynamic range in audio the average power drawn is typically going to be < 50% of those figures even when run flat out with lifeless music that's been heavily compressed.
In that kind of rig they'll have something like a 50 F capacitor fitted near the amp to supply the peaks.

I would be surprised if it was greater than 200 watts. I would like to know what amperage are these devices rated for (a fact that they seem to hide quite a bit)

Oh - it'll be quite substantial. I know of some 25?" speakers for sound reinforcement that have a 1200W continuous rating. That's pretty much as big as they get though.
That speaker looks like it has a ( heatsinked ) long coil assembly so I reckon it'll match that. Modern materials allow voice coils to run dull red would you believe !
