Anyone have a source for really bright IR (~900-950 nm wavelength) LEDs?
I'm trying to build a night camera. I've got the camera modified to see in that wavelength but the 16 normal (20 ma) LEDs just don't provide enough light. I could just build a whole sh*tload of 20 ma LED lights but maybe if someone knows of some brighter ones I could save some work....
I am trying to illuminate an area of about 12x30" from a distance of 18".

Inches. I'm trying to illuminate a reptile cage. See for the snakecam. (Definitely alpha quality ATM; I'm shooting through the glass of the tank.) (I haven't figured out how to get the camera mounted in the tank so that a. the snake won't use it as a perch, and b. any holes I cut in the tank the snake will use to escape.)

Well, that's part of the problem. See below.
I tested this with an ordinary Logetech webcam, which I took apart and removed the IR filter. It worked like a charm; that camera sees the 940 nm LEDs as a bright light source. Unfortunately I can't find an embedded computer that can run one of these reliably. Webcams are pretty resource intensive, and the basic 200 MHz embedded machine won't handle one beyond a too-low resolution. So after many attempts I switched to a Airlink AIC250 IP camera. I removed the IR filter from it, but the camera isn't nearly as sensitive in the 940-950 nm range as I'd hoped.
Based on your comments, which confirm my suspicions, I think I need to experiment with 880nm LEDs. I can't find a source of high intensity IR LEDs in that range, though.
You are repeating a slur on Albert Einstein that the religiose love to foster. He never wrote or said those words. They are from a passage which, when the deliberately omitted words are restored, is seen to mean the exact opposite of what the misquotation appears to say. What did Einstein say elsewhere about those who attribute religious belief to him ? This:- "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal god and I have never denied this but expressed it clearly.."
Plain ol' ~20ma IR LEDs from All Electronics worked for me. I built a board of
2 banks x 6-series-LEDs and mounted that alongside a nothing-special miniature CCD camera (not web cam though), about 3-4 feet away from the subject. Viewed area was approx. 4ft square (maybe as much as 4x5 ft.)
