MS Got me with W2k network issues :(

I have tons of schematics, sims, reference PDFs on a W2k PC, yes I know it's old but it works flawlessly..

I Also have a W7 power house machine with large monitor etc, and at times I like to do my boards, sims on that but reference the W2k via the lan for shared resources..

I bring this problem here because I know there are few that still have older PCs and on a network.

Well today I tried to connect to the share from W7 over to the W2k PC, and all I got was a failed attempt stating my username or password etc was wrong even though the network tools tell me W2k is just fine but tells me I have no permission to connect to it.. After long looking on net I found some blurb about the Lan Manager using version 2 and to put a Reg hack in the ControlSet of the reg back to version 1.

I don't know if I want to do this but, do you think it's time for me to go to store and get another power house PC that will talk to each other and move all of files over to it? I don't like keeping all of my references on just one PC, not a smart thing to do.. What do you guys do in cases of MS screwing you like that? Have you found a quick fix or do I have to blow the dust off my piggy-bank?

Does the W2k machine have the same account name and password as the Win7 machine? That's the only way WIN7 can connect to another win7 machine.

Well, apparently *not* --^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Set up a NAS box (built from a surplus PC) that just acts as a file service. Configure it for SMB/CIFS, NFS, HTTP and FTP access. You'll never find yourself "locked out" because of a protocol problem (as you've described).

[Granted, some protocols are much friendlier than others. But, if you are willing to transfer a file to your local machine in order to access/open/view it, this is a win all `round]

N.B. That box doesn't need a keyboard, mouse *or* monitor to function.

It normally pops up a dialog box allowing me to enter the user name and password is not required because I don't have the W2k password protected. This used to work just fine, then today I did not.

I changed the Lan Manager flag to use Version 2 via MS site restructions for W2k. THat didn't do anything for it however, when I rebooted, it caused me to spend the rest of the night fixing the missing short cuts on teh desktop and screw up programs., I have a couple programs that are so screwed up that I need to re- install them from CD> I can't say for sure what happend there however, it's possible I may have a failing HD. it is an old machine, the original HD is in it. I know last night I was experiencing some strange stall out issues from the net trying to down load some large PDF files that failed to down load. Could of been the start of the death. I have 99% of what I need recovered, I just need to make backups and move the stuff over to a newer machine, time to retire the girl!

I use Linux, and brag about how it doesn't do those things that Windows does.

I generally keep quiet when I'm getting screwed by some uniquely Linux issue.
