Both ncal and 9base are separate packages. ncal is just the calendar thing, 9base is a collection utilities. It will mess with many of the more usual Ubuntu utilities.

I wondered why 1752, then I discovered it’s defaulting to the British Empire.

Actually, cal is just a symlink to ncal. The program looks at the commandline to see whether it has been invoked as cal or as ncal and adapts its behaviour accordingly.
$ ls -al /usr/bin/cal lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Feb 20 2023 /usr/bin/cal -> ncal
