choice of external USB drive for mount at boot

True, but it is handy to prevent it being damaged and stopping working by excessive common mode voltages ;-)

It is good practice to make sure all equipment ground is at a common DC potential at least, even if you cant arrange it to be at the same AC potential.

EMC considerations pretty much mandate connecting the screen to chassis at both ends - literally the outside skin of the chassis. I'm referring to the skin effect here because signals at the frequencies involved pass only through the skins of the chassis and not its bulk.

Breaking the integrity of the screening is reminiscent of the things we used to try to do when connecting together multiple pieces of audio equipment, each earthed, and with the grounding strategy not thought through at the design stage. Not relevant considerations here.

Well, you can look up the specs & reviews for sealed units too, but I guess what you are saying is a bit better.

That's not necessarily true. Early in this thread I thought I would contribute by posting a comparison of the physical characteristics of my Seagate Backup Plus Desktop and my Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable. I could not find any numbers at all, not even the rotational speed. The secrecy is not confined to Seagate drives - . It seems that at least Seagate and WD use whatever is at hand to populate their external drives and they do not change the model number if they change the drive.
