UV light and damage to a CCD? (Ping Phil Hobbs)

I have a friend that is going to be photographing TIG welding. Sheheard a rumor that the light from welding, which I believe has astrong UV component, can damage a digital camera sensor. I can't thinkof a mechanism for this to be true, but would like to hear some (coughcough) expert opinions, especially from Dr. Hobbs.

Burning a vidicon, I believe. Glass has thermal conductivity around 1 W/m/K, as opposed to 100-150 for silicon, so that 80C becomes ~1000C.

I would expect color CCD to have an anti-UV coating on the lens.
