Thanks for that. As a single data point I always see these (relaxation/ gain swapping) oscillations in the laser diodes we use at ~6-7 GHz. It shows up as side bands in the spectrum.

Actually there are plenty of 10Gb/s lasers for Ethernet at shorter wavelengths.

Yes there are, mostly at 850 nm, as I noted upthread. However, VCSELs typically go through one or several mode transitions as they turn on, which I would expect will degrade the jitter compared with a lithium niobate modulator and a well-isolated CW laser.

There are standard fiberoptical transceiver things, with some electronics inside, that slide into mating PCB sockets, sort of like overgrown SC fiber connectors. It might make sense to buy them and not re-invent something difficult. Being telecom parts, they are unfortunately AC coupled all the way through.
Can't recall what they are called.
There are various transceiver standards for that. I'm sort of out of touch with that world at this point.
