How do you feel about the increase in the deficit as a result of the tax overhaul?

Personally I'd like to see spending cut and an increase in taxes. Something that approaches a balanced budget. (like that is going to ever happen.)

I think the boom in business will more than make up for it.

The thing that needs to be done... needs to be done at the State level: States must be forced to run balanced budgets.

Also: Why should Dimocrap States be subsidized by allowing State taxes deductible off Federal income?

Doesn't matter much to me. I only paid $766 in Federal taxes last year... got $50 "benefit" from the State ;-)

Paid more in property tax... ~$2400. ...Jim Thompson

I wonder what the POTUS paid in tax? He promised that was forthcoming...and he always keeps his promises (he says so) and he has a very good memory (and says so) so he could not possibly have forgotten the promise to release his tax return.

Crap, I promised myself I wouldn't talk about that con man. Drat!

Because "red states" consume the bulk of "entitlement dollars" and we're constantly shelling out for their broke asses.

The GOP tax plan does give the middle class a federal tax cut bordering on the insulting in exchange for massive slashes for the wealthy. I mean, even psychological studies on chimpanzees show that chimps get pissed off when they're handed a cucumber slice and their neighbor is dining on a stack of grapes.

Humans you can always make promises to, though.

That's what claimed every time isn't it?

I think most states have a balanced budget rule... not that they can't cook the books if they want.

Hey my state tops the list! :^)

Total state debt is ~1/20th the federal debt.

I don't see any reason they should. I also would like to see the mortgage interest deduction go away. And tax interest income/ capital gains the same as 'work'.

Rationalizing corporate taxes would be a good thing. My fear is the big corporations/ lobbyists get in there and tip the scales back in their direction. And we end up about where we are now.

Balanced budgets are passe. Only non-great countries balance their budget. Ever seen a billionaire sitting around balancing their checkbook?

Restraining spending would be ipso facto evidence of America's non-greatness. Just spend until the money you spend bootstraps enough income to repay the principal and interest on what you spent. Fake it 'til you make it.

Socialism: take from those that have and give to those that don't.

That should make the coastal elites happy.

Big corps barely pay tax. The 35% Fed business tax mostly whacks small and medium-small businesses... the same businesses that create most of the domestic jobs.

We shouldn't tax corporations at all. Just tax people, preferably by taxing consumption.

Billionaires tend to have positive net worth.

Spend our way to prosperity with borrowed money?

Just wait until interest rates get back to normal, and the US has to pay real interest on its debt.

Absolutely! Why people can't understand that corporate taxes are simply passed thru directly to the consumer as higher prices I just can't fathom. ...Jim Thompson

If corps have to compete with offshore sources, they can't pass on their tax costs. Cost doesn't set selling prices anyhow: the market does.

If I could pass on the cost of a private jet and a villa in Aspen to my customers, I would.

What high corporate taxes do is drive businesses offshore, or put them out of business because they can't survive in a market with offshore competitors. Even within the US, the relatively small state tax differential drives businesses between states.

It's also crazy that states usually don't have a sales tax on services.

I'm surprised that I have to explain stuff this simple.

What are normal interest rates?

Really...

Do you recall when there were federal laws against usury? You couldn't charge interest at more than X points above Prime (usually 5 points). That went out the window when credit cards hit 28% during the 80s and they never let go of that ripoff.

I pay my balance every month, but lots of folks don't or can't and are ruined as a result.

I don't know and haven't thought much about taxes. I guess it should be fair. There are lots of people who live pay check to pay check... Are they getting taxed on everything they make? Is rent taxed, what about buying a house?

That seems to be what the latest tax cuts will be. I think I'll save a kilo buck or two.. (mostly from the expansion of the standard deduction.) People paying more taxes get a bigger cut. I think most of the money going to the government in my name will be from payroll taxes.

you don't need much imagination to think that is exactly how the big corps that have money for lobbyist want it

35% is very high, most of Europe is in the 20's

taxing comsumption puts the tax system upside down, so those with the lowest incomes pay the most tax
