Sure, they could have like a weekly "Free Speech" night, say every Sunday at 8 pm, where anybody is free to book a slot in the auditorium at no cost and rant on about any topic they wish to whomever feels like showing up. Could be fun, sounds fine to me.

In other words, the Office for Students will get to define who is allowed to speak at UK universities, as opposed to the academics who run the places, and will have to live with the consequences of the decisions made by the Office for Students.

Right-wing nitwits complain about the nanny state, but stop complaining when it is a right-wing government which is doing the nannying.

Well that's very generous of you to grant others the right to speak their views for one evening a week I must say! The problem with 'free speech evenings' and 'free speech zones' is that once they become accepted there is nothing to stop those evenings and zones from progressively shrinking - which is what would invariably happen with people like Bill Slowperson calling the shots. I'm not prepared to make *any* concession to limits on free speech. I have always said whatever the hell I please to anyone at any time and plan on doing the same until the day I die. HTH.

no, this is the reason:

"Several controversial speakers have been banned from UK universities in recent years for their views, including feminist author Germaine Greer and gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell."

Hell, the UK bans people from entering, simply because they don't like what they *say*.

oh be careful, Sug-Man is going to have something stupid to say about that, because as you know, he is king when it comes to ignoramus.

It is extremely generous, because I understand the far right doesn't actually give a good god damn about real free speech, and that the purpose of this whole "The universities are destroying free speech!" exercise and trying to act like it's some great outrage that they don't want anyone walking onto campus and giving talks anytime they feel like it is simply to waste as much university time and money as possible. Then use that waste as further evidence that the public university system is fatally "flawed."

It's set-up, knock down. Not foolin' anybody.

That is to say the far right's goal is primarily just to have various white nationalists and racist riff-raff show up on campuses three times a week, instigate drama, outrage, and hopefully violence, and generally shit things up.

Do you really believe what you just bloviated, or are you so brain-washed you are just a spout for the left?

If you were an honest person you'd readily see that it is the LEFT, calling themselves ANTIFA, who are against free speech and think it OK to stop free speech by violence.

But you are a DISHONEST person.

The right's goal should be to resist this un-Constitutional restraint of free speech, by armed force, if necessary.

At the very least, track down this SOB "bitrex" and make him unemployed. ...Jim Thompson

I've already extended an open invitation to anyone on the NG who wants to meet up for dinner when they're in the Boston area and I'll cover the expense. Got George H as a possible, we could do like a sci.electronics.design meetup. Sounds like fun.

BTW I said I thought universities should set aside time for anyone to book time to speak on any topic they like regardless of my own personal feelings on the particulars of what their politics are, or what their motivations are or not. That was the OP's original point, yeah? That I agreed with. Hey, what more do ya want?
