Actually this one might have some truth in it. Experiments with cranial stimulation have produced devices that can alter moods and/or produce curious states. There was a professor of neuroscience interviewed on the BBC recently who had conducted some pretty dangerous experiments on himself involving direct electrical stimulation of the brain.
