There's an older Chinese couple who lives in apartment down the road from me - lots of wealthy Chinese businesspeople have been buying property in the Boston area lately and they often bring their elders here and get them a little place to live in.
Gardening seems to be an extremely popular hobby amongst the elderly Chinese folks around here. I stopped by their place to look at theirs as they were working on it, but unfortunately they seem to speak very little English.
The android Google Translate app has a thing where you can make a full screen picture of the translated text, so I gave that a try. It only has "simplified" and "traditional" Chinese as choices; Mandarin I guess? I typed in "The garden looks good" and showed it to him and the old man looked at it and seemed to understand, pointing at the garden and giving a thumbs up.
I then tried "What kind of vegetables are you growing?" and showed him, and he seemed puzzled by the translation and gave a shrug and a look indicating it was kind of gibberish.
Any thoughts on how to better approach an interaction like this?
