OT: Java updates and Ask toolbar

Hi

Sorry to post OT, but I am increasingly annoyed by the Java updates, almost every 2-3 days now. And Oracle has the bright idea to try to get people to install the "Ask toolbar".

Just immagine, complete waste of time, power and bandwidht, 500million PCs updating every week and each person spending a minute per update

Anyone know if its possible to set only update on critical updates (security issues)?

Regards

Klaus

Next thing you know is that *all* updates are security critical.

Keep them scared, it keeps them spending.

Java is free, but at the moment their updates *are* security critical the blasted thing has a huge gaping zero day attack hole in it meaning that anyone sensible has temporarily disabled it in their browser.

Have you not seen all the announcements. And I do agree with the OP that the increasing volume of subvert your search engine dross offered with "free" maintenance upgrades is a PITA.

I see a lot of web traffic from people who have had their browser search engine subverted by helpful AV or other "free" tracking adware.

That wouldn't help. The recent spate of updates have been for security issues.

Wasn't Java supposed to be designed for security? Well, unfortunately, most of the JRE is written in C or C++ because Java is too slow and/or it has to interface with third-party APIs written in C/C++.

The best definition for Java I've ever read is: "a corporate solution to a non existing technical problem".

It is kind of weird. On the workplace PC i get this crap at least daily, but i am not an admin, so i can do nothing about it. At home, where i am admin i can control it easily and it does not pester me daily, as i can update or tell it to go to you know where.

From what I've read, all of the recent Java updates (the last month or two) have been for security issues. There have been a number of new Java exploits (including some zero-day attacks) which are being actively exploited.

At this point, security experts seem to be recommending that people not install Java (and de-install it if already installed) unless they have a truly pressing need to run Java apps. And, even if you do run specific apps, disabling Java-in-the-browser (e.g. disabling applet execution) is recommended.

True. Expanding a bit i always use NoScript, and any site that wants to run it on my machine better have a very compelling case. Best of all i can enable it for only the length of the session, which means that permission goes away as soon as i close the browser. And i have a fairly standard work process of start browser, get something done/found close browser.
