When Thomas Paine wrote "Common Sense" what he had to say made sense.

More recent users of the phrase have been less convincing.

Sadly, America defines it's elite in terms of the advantages they've had from their parents, and that elite seems primarily busy making sure that it's kids will have the same advantages.

Wealth in the US is more heritable than height, and intergenerational social mobility is a lot lower than in Scandinavia and Germany.

America might have been "great" once - in that life there didn't suck as badly as it did in other countries - but it's not great now.

Sometimes top posting works better than bottom posting. Sometimes it doesn't.

But anyone with a bit of intelligence should be able to cope with both methods.

Jim Thompson has quite a few silly ideas, all based on his imperfect greasp of reality.

Probably not. The number of psychopathic gun nuts in my suburb of Sydney is remarkably low. We used to lose a few people to aggressive drunks, who kno cked people down with sucker punches so that they banged their heads on the kerb hard enough inflict brain damage, but the regulations on places that sell alcohol got tightened up - not much but enough to move the violent dru nks elsewhere - and that pretty much went away.

His logic isn't great either, but Jim wouldn't be aware of that.
