OT: Dial-up problem

Normally, (in Win98SE) when i click on my Seamonkey icon, a dial-up window pops up and the password is there (shown as stars), the "remember password" box is checked and the "automatically dial" box is also checked - so i need do nothing as it all works without any fuss. BUT. Now the password box is empty and the other boxes are unchecked; filling it all out works, but the password is *NOT* saved and so i am now being forced to do all of this BS each time. Have tried everything accessable to no avail. How in the heck can it be fixed?

Not sure it will help you at all, but you can try this (see below).... I had a similar problem with AOL (duck & cover now).... some of us still use AOL.

Anyway, the problem there was I typed in the wrong password and for the life of me could not figure out how to undo it. Every time I loaded AOL, it would have the incorrect password pre- populated. Getting back to blank, or even better, the right password didn't seem possible.

What I did was type a 2nd bogus password. Windows asked me if it wanted me to remember it. I said yes. Then, of course, AOL would not log on. (As expected)

So, I reload AOL, and this time I overwrite the password I just told it to remember with the correct password, and it asks me again if I want to remember it (the new one I just typed). Evidently, Windows must store passwords in context. So, it knows AOL, my screen name, and auto-populates the password. In my case (XP-3 or XP-3) Windows wouldn't ask to store a newly typed password unless it was non-blank to begin with, and was not a duplicate typing of something it had just previously stored.

At least I think that's the way I did it. Anyway, give it a shot. Maybe it will work for you too.

My sister's Win98 pc had similar problems, caused by installing the dialer software from an Earthlink CD. Windows' own dialer would never keep the "autodial" box checked after that. I don't remember if saving her password was also a problem. The info below fixed whatever was wrong.

-------------------------- Navigate to the location below in your registry and make the corresponding change.

Create or edit the existing binary value "EnableAutodial", and set the new value to "01 00 00 00" to enable autodial or "00 00 00 00" to disable it.

This restriction can be used either on a per user basis by adding it to HKEY_CURRENT_USER or on a system basis by adding it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Key:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] Value Name: EnableAutodial Data Type: REG_BINARY Data:00 00 00 00 = disabled, 01 00 00 00 = enabled

Try going to 'Control Panel' -> 'Internet Options' -> 'Connections' tab Select your connection and click '[Settings...] Everything in '{my_connection_name} Settings' is cleared here apart from my user name and password. The password is shown as ****** in the usual way. This dialog lets you save a user name and password *without* connecting. The DUN connectoid only saves the password if it connects successfully.

If its idea of successful isn't the same as reality, you get the trouble you are having. Pre-stoeing the password may get it past that. Otherwise, make a new connection and copy the settings from the old one as the registry entry for the connectoid may be damaged.

OK, first I'm not familiar with SeaMonkey, but in other Mozilla products that save passwords, this happens if there is more than one password saved for that particular item. Is there a password list? If so, check to see if there is more than one saved password.

Seamonkey uses the system default DUN connectoid. It doesn't have its own DUN manager.

Just looked; it is enabled everywhere (4 places). So now what?

That did not work; that was the second thing i tried. But...doing a new one is worthwhile..will let you know.

Username and password, presumedly for logon are correct; each item is seperate, where URL sites have both together as one item.

That is what i thought, but it did not hurt to look.

I would go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Communications - Details, uncheck Dial-up Networking and OK to remove the thing. Then retrace the steps and check Dial-up Networking again. You might need the Windows CD handy.

You can always delete that connection in the DUN and re-enter it as a new connection, or just create a duplicate with a different name and select it as the default connection. That removes the existing login and password.

Password fiddling and even making a new connection (icon) helped. Well, not quote..after doing both, it worked *ONCE* and now it is back to same old stuff..except it is now taking forever to do the handshake.

** All looks OK, exactly as you mentioned in the settings section. And the connectoid is blank for password; i put it in, check the "save" box and then check the "auto connect" box and NOW after a loooonnnggg wait it finally connects properly. BUT i am forced to do that every time now, so there is *NO* saving (!!). Getting a bit frustrated at all of this garbage.

...ahhh...retreat _two_ steps in hopes that clears things. Will try.

Neither trick helped.

That totally destroyed the system for networking; it was impossible to do anything related to DUN, etc. I am now back to square one.

That was the goal, square one. Once DUN is eventually back, there's a Dial-Up Networking 1.4 Upgrade available from Microsoft.

In the Settings section > "Properties" button (next to User name), "Server Types" tab, uncheck "Log on to network" to stop the long wait. The network it's hopelessly looking for is a LAN, not the internet.
