OT Brother 2240 printer wierd problem

My Brother 2240 printer warned of low toner, & eventually quit when the toner was empty. Staples would happily sell me a new toner cartridge for 45 dollars - and they had the entire printer for sale at 50 dollars. I bought the printer.

All good so far. For the repair, I took the toner & drum assembly from the new 2240 and put it in the old 2240. No good - it would not work. It goes in just fine, but the old 2240 would not work. What the heck is going on with that??? Whyintheheck wouldn't that new toner/drum assembly work in the old printer??? Maybe there's something you have to do when installing a new drum & toner assembly that I don't know about. :-(

To complete the story: I installed the new printer with the toner & drum assembly that came with it, & it works fine.

I ordered a toner refill kit and refilled the old toner cartridge. The old printer now works fine, too.

The brothers need to have the Drum counter reset. I don?t think there is any counter for the toner.

Had a similar problem with a Samsung color printer- transfering an alread-used toner cartridge from one printer to another of the same type would not work. This could be done easily with an EEPROM on the printer cartridge, maybe to prevent refilled cartridges from being sold.

Thanks Martin, that explains it. Mystery solved! :-)

Regarding the toner counter - you are right, there isn't one. They use a mechanically driven "flag gear" that rotates a tiny bit every time a page is printed, apparently regardless of how much toner is used for printing that page. When the gear rotation eventually reaches 180 degrees that signals that the toner is empty - again, apparently with no regard for how much toner remains. When you refill the toner for the first time you need to install a different flag gear. Subsequent refills do not require replacing that flag gear.

Thanks Spehro. Maybe the Samsung has a procedure similar to the drum reset that Martin mentioned for the Brother.

The Brother does have a mechanism to limit the life of the toner that is installed in the printer when you first buy it. They have a one time use "flag gear" on the original toner that signals toner empty after X amount of printing.

If you refill the toner cartridge you must replace that flag gear with one of a different design. That allows more printing before signaling toner empty, and need not be replaced for subsequent refills.
