OT: American National Academy of Science on Climate Change

It's a 130 page book in pdf format - you have to give them an e-mail address and your name to get it, but beyond that it's free.

I've downloaded a copy and browsed through it, and it's just the standard scientific story, but delivered with the imprint of the American National Academy of Science. Exxon-Mobil doesn't yet seem to have yet worked how to get at any significant number of members of the academy.

It's 55F and raining here now. It almost never rains in June in San Francisco. Looks like we'll break the all-time (127 year) monthly rainfall record in just the first week of June. We got 74 feet of snow near Donner Summit this year. So much for "warm and dry."

Even the left-trending Sacramento Bee called it "Global Weirdness" this morning which I found surprising. The statewide snowpack is reported at

262% of average, low temperature records are falling all over the place. Our wood stove is cranking another full load right now. This season's wood consumption dwarfs anything we ever had, we are now well over five cords. 10 years ago two cord were plenty enough. Since we only had 4-1/2 this means we have dug deeply into next season's supply so we'll inevitably run out next season despite having ordered the record quantity of five cords instead of four :-(

What did we learn? Order six cords next time. At least. More is better.

Yeah, you guys have an insatiable consumption when it gets hot. I cut that down to peanuts via an evap cooler. Except now I don't know why I installed it, the winter will simply not end. Even really old folks who've lived here almost since the time of the pilgrims can't recall ever having needed to heat in June.

I did that at the old house, back when I was poor... now I'm a comfort seeker ;-)

Climate change is mostly due to poor memory. I can remember snow in BOSTON in June ;-) ...Jim Thompson

But you get Hydro power, no? I'm watching Lake Powell's depth to see if it's going to recover to +90%. Looks like they have already passed the 7/8's of total required outflow for the year. I'm guessing Lake Mead would follow suite.

Keep it dry and there won't be any carpenter ants. If you're paranoid, leave a bunch of boric acid around.

It's almond and critters leave it alone. We get it either seasoned wood (like this time) or half-seasoned.

The only issue are some weird bees, black ones of about 1/2" diameter and roundish, that want to eat into the beams of a small wood deck here. Never into the firewood. Wish I'd find a way to get rid of those. I might put metal screen underneath. Hoping they don't have a HomeDepot gift card and come with a power drill ...

Carpenter bees. They're horrible down here. Our house has exposed rafter-ends (they're fake, actually) and the bees love 'em. The first Spring we were here, I had an exterminator come out and spray for them and plug the holes. That seemed to help break the cycle and we haven't had too much trouble since. I'll have to get out the ladder and inspect closer but it'll have to wait until it's not quite so hot.

The only thing that will discourage them completely is aluminum. ;-) Seriously, you want to make the surface as hard as possible. A good coat of glossy paint is supposed to frustrate them so they go elsewhere. Maybe an Epoxy?

How many years of cold and wet weather do we need before we decide that the climate is cold and wet?

The question is actually how much global warming is it going to take to shift the regular weather patterns. The predictions that you complain about not having come true seem to be for the period 2035 to

2060, when global warming will probably be twice what it is today.

I might just dab primer on the bottom sides of the beams, they don't seem to like anything painted. Spraying, not so good. We have a lizard on duty and he waits for them to stick their behinds back out ... snap ... ka-crunch. Don't want him to get sick. But he can eat only so many. Maybe we should provide some Maalox to him.
