This is how I speed up some EMI jobs. I use a scannner most of the time anyhow and then when swooping in on a spike I turn it to single-sideband (SSB). This results in a nasty whine and when that goes on people's nerves I don headphones. Wheeeeee .... tappa-di-tap ... tock ... bang ... tap .... wheeeoooooiieeeoouie ... aha, that where it comes from!

Old air variables can vibrate enough to frequency modulate an oscillator. Someone told me I couldn't get FM out of an old heathkit generator, so I tuned t to the center frequency of the business radio he was working, then yelled into the air vents. It was so loud on the radio's built in speaker that he almost fell off his bench stool. ;-)
