I set up my other pi b+ to play through my monitor speakers using a hdmi cable some time ago and it works ,no problem. Attempting to set up my new Pi2 B in the same way has outwitted me!! If I set Sonic Pi to headphones I can hear the note on the headphones. If I alter the setting to hdmi I get nothing which suggests an incorrect setting further back in the chain. However in raspi-config I have set hdmi as well as in /boot/config.txt where I have set hmdi_drive=2.
Any suggestions anyone

If I plug in the headphones on selecting headphones in Sonic I immediately get the background 'hiss' and notes will play. If I select hdmi or default the hiss goes away but no notes are heard ove the Tv speakers. Just plugging in the older Pi with same software settings the notes play.
Are different settings required for Pi2 ?

That's what my config.txt looks like (except that I do specify the HMDI gro up and mode to get 1680x1050) and sound now seems to work better on the Pi2 than it did on the Pi, when I had to (for example) specify HDMI audio outp ut in omxplayer to get sound on TV speakers.
I don't use Sonic Pi, but omxplayer and desktop media players (VLC etc) see m fine. The OS is Raspbian/jessie.
You may want to run a mixer and see if your sound has been muted. Occasionally I find my non-pi Debian install has muted itself, or maybe I did it and didn't realize what had happened.
And yes, you can set different devices to different settings.
