Panasonic DMR-ES20 DVD Recorder Issue

Hi,

I have a Panasonic DVD recorder issue. When you plug it in (AC outlet), the rolling "ooooooo" (initializing/recovery) never ends. I can force it to go into standby by holding the Power button (on front panel) for 10 seconds. Now there is a flashing "12:00". Next, I press the power button on unit or remote, and a "Hello" appears. Normally, the "Hello" appears for a few seconds, then goes away. Now, "Hello" stays on for hours. I did not wait to see how many hours. Note: If I hold the power button for 10 seconds on the unit, the display changes back to the flashing "12:00". However, I still can NOT use this recorder.

PLEASE do NOT make suggestions because I have been there and done that (years of electronics service repair background).

IMPORTANT:

I am looking for someone who had the EXACT SAME problem with this model, "DMR-ES20" (NO letters after "20"), and he/she fixed it. What did you do to fix this problem?

Yes. Bad capacitor. Replacing it fixed it.

Handy to know. I have a DMR-ES20 that I haven't used for a few years but I did like it a lot and you never know...

I had some other DVD recorder, I found it in a recycling bin. It worked, but got flakier. It used a standard 40pin connector, so I tried a computer DVD drive, I think that worked, but didn't fix the problem.

So yes, given that I got an Acer 19" LCD monitor going by changing electrolytics in the power supply (it sort of worked, but would reset and I'd lose video then), I'm inclined to believe the DVD recorder needs new electrolytics in the power supply. I've yet to pursue it because it's not very useful now, the tuner doesn't receive DTV. But if it was still useful, I'd have pursued the power supply.

Many years ago I had a somewhat similar problem with a similar Panasonic DVD recorder (DMR-E55). It went into an endless checking cycle at switch on. It was fixed by replacing the regulator chip (Sanken STRG6353), which was stressed and operating at the limit of its specs with a barely-sufficient heat sink. I also fitted a bigger heat sink.

Why might this be relevant despite your comment? Because the same fault was known to affect other Panasonic DVD and HDD devices.

All of them done without component diagnosis?

Sounds like a processor code crash. Noisy power rails. Bad supply decoupling.

Service manual should be about?

I really liked the way mine handled DVD-RAM. Being able to chase-record (time-slip) with a DVD recorder was great, as was being able to part-erase a disc.

I have an DMR-E30 with an issue very equal. You can switch it on and nothing happens. It looks dead. But wenn you switch it of (10s keypress) it write "BYE" in the Display. All Powerrails are fine.

I have a servicemanual and I know there is a maintanance mode. But it did not work. So I realy believe there is something wrong in the mainprocessor, because it can write "BYE" in the VFD, but it did not change its behavier with maintanance jumper. Strange!

The old Panis are famous for a fault in the supply, especially of the chip someone wrote before in this thread. Unfortunatly some have bigger problems.

That is very sad, because the human interface device was much more sophisticated than on my new 2000Euro TV with integrated recording cabability. But fortunatly the TV program is so bad in these days that recording is not necessary anymore.

There is more than one capacitor in this unit.

Hello I would like to help owners of DMR-ES20 to fix the known "zero" error. This occur due a failure on PSU section that can't provide correct voltages to other sections/modules.
