Embedded Linux Learning Kit

Hi All,

I have been working on embedded product for few years now, but don't have any experience with linux. I would like to learn it using real hardware (some sort of kit), main focus it to write small apps, create image, upload image to the board (processor (ARM/any other widely used) running embedded linux), debug small programs. I came across Doug Abbot's ELLK, but the reviews on Amazon suggests it only teaches Eclipse details. My goal is to learn about processes, busybox, debugging etc...

Please suggest embedded linux hardware kit along with a book that helps learn using that kit.

Thanks in advance !

-Bill.

To learn embedded Linux I recommend getting a generic book, either Building Embedded Linux Systems or Embedded Linux Primer, and choosing a board that is listed on elinux.org, see

I have used the BeagleBoard from beagleboard.org, and the Hammer kit from Tincantools.com and found them to be well documented.

You can get the hammer kit with a debugger from Tincantools, their flyswatter debugger can also be used with the beagleboard and they have some other add-on boards for it as well.

Thanks for the response, it is very helpful.

I read information about Beagleboard, but I'm not sure how to get learning experience using it. Looks more like projects, and less embedded linux experience. Could you please describe the learning process using Beagleboard in detail? I will appreciate your inputs.

Also, anyone else who has inputs on this?

Hi Bill, Sorry for the delay in responding, this may not even be relevant any more. But I felt I should tell you that the Embedded Linux Learning Kit has nothing to do with my Eclipse book that is listed on Amazon. In fact, the ELLK takes you through the process of setting up a cross-development environment and building and testing applications on a real target board. You also configure and build the Linux kernel for the board.
