reverse polarity for a pool chlorinator

i want to build a polarity reverser circuit that reverses the polarity on my saltwater chlorinator as this keeps the salt cell clean. i want something that changes the polarity every time the clorinator turns on, it is on a timer with the pool filter and runs every day. a new control box for the salt cell costs around $1400.00. any help would be much appreciated,

Seems like those that do the auto-clean function run two banks of cell(s), putting one in 'clean mode' while the other is in 'chlorinate mode'. Assuming you need to clean a cell for the same length of time as long as you use it, and that you need to chlorinate more than half the time the pool is used, you may need two or more cells and wire them via a timer to auto-polarity reverse.

I don't know zip about chlorinators but.... why aren't the things 12V AC if DC is so bad for them?

I know only a little more than zip.

basically it's two stainless-steel electrodes in a salt solution.

passing electricity through them produces caustic soda, hydrogen and chlorine.

(you can try this at home, 12V is enough to get reasonably vigouurous gas production....)

the one I saw had a mesh cathode and a plate for the anode.

I've seen scale (calcium carbonate?) build up on one of the electrodes I think this if from atmospheric carbon dioxide disolving it from the filter and it being deposited when the caustic soda formed in the electrolysis cell converts calcuium bicarbonate to calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate.

ISTM that dipping the electrodes in hydrochloric acid periodically would fix that, (the acid is needed in any case to neutralise the caustic soda formed in the cell, and to replenish the source of chlorine).
