Pace soldering pulsed resistance unit

Does anyone know how these work. They are 2 volt and they essentially drive a very low resistance device, pair of tweezers for example. I think they use PWM for the "on" time and there is a pot to adjust it. I think maybe 50 amps is possible but I can't remember where I read this.

However I think about it I can't figure how to build one reasonably easily.

I got a 3.5V 150 VA transformer as a starting point so steer me from there :)
