"Doomsday" solar flare heads for Earth?

formatting link

Well not quite, but one as bad as the 1859 flare could cause widespread loss of power, system failures, ATM failures, etc etc.

No it's Bill Gates, almost as big, certainly as damaging to society but nowhere near as pretty.

Oh oh. My Windoze just crashed. Do you think it's Solaris flare?

My jeans are no good - is it the flares?

Unlikely - a big enough radiation surge to crash Windows would make mincemeat of DNA .

What are you saying?!?!?!?

The radiation of a single anti-Gates thought at 50 paces can crash Windows, fergawdsake! :)

A single neutrino passing through the memory or CPU can crash Windows, even though neutrinos do not interact (much) with matter .

Anyone out there have any info of this flare creating any problems like power failures, etc? Apparently Canada would have been hit the worst? Any info or feedback?

Regards.

If you live in a northern location where they're visible. I don't think they'll get as far south as So. Calif. Especially with the poor visibility caused by the wildfires. During the early morning and late afternoon, the sun looks orange like it does at sunset.

ATM failures? Like automatic teller machines? Well, use your credit card. If you meant ATM as in Asynch Transfer Mode, AKA datacomm links, well many if not most of those are over fiber, so those shouldn't be affected.

Andre, get a close grip on yourself, then explain how such system failures could occur. Obviously solar flares disrupt radio communications, but after many years of experiencing these things, don't you think that by now major system operations have a handle on this periodic problem?

Given that there have been at least 43 recorded cases of satellite damage due to solar flares including the total loss of a broadcast satellite several years ago, it would appear not. Not to mention the incredible currents that can be induced in the power grid due to compression of the Earth's magnetic field. How would you propose that they shield the system from such effects? BTW, last time I looked, most semiconductors in use were not radiation hardened. FYI, HF communications for the airlines was all but eliminated yesterday and the solution was to tell the pilots not to deviate from their scheduled course (like to avoid a storm or turbulence). So perhaps you're right after all, they've got it completely under control. ;-)

I would suggest the obvious...if it's not broken, don't try to fix it.

Yes, and the the semoconductor damage resulting from solar flares is?

Actually the airlines have not used HF communications since around the

1940s. It's a moot point, and no airline schedules were affect by the solar flares, nor much of anything else as any educated person would expect.

Of course they have. This is why there were no headlines today about the terrible disruptions resulting from the solar flares.

Anthony (or whatever your real name is) you have no clue.

What's next, you're going to unleash stil another of your nitwit hacker attacks against me? Try harder, you third shift, computer operator looser!

They still do use it for transoceanic flights. As they are still not using satcom there is no other way.

Actually, power companies from Sweden to New Jersey temporarily cut production to prepare for the possible surges.

It's not so much the actual flares themselves, it's the heavier particles that do the damage when they hit the Earth 1-5 days after the flare.

You are completely out of your gourd on this one, but of course you will never admit it.

There were no headlines because they lucked out again.

Yet another typical Harry C ad-hominem attack. What are you talking about hackers, are you suggesting that I have committed some kind of computer crime against you?

Speaking of losers, at least I'm not a full fledged member of the "Crackpot" list on sci.physics. I can also proudly say that I haven't been proven to be a liar many dozens of times on usenet, though the Google archives show you to not be quite so fortunate.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of electicity can see that huge induced currents caused by natural phenomena such as lightning and geomagnetic storms can disrupt any electric system. The operators can take some precautions, but using lightning as an example, they're not going to go to the extreme precaution of putting everything in a faraday shielded cage. So the operators are going to run systems as conservatively as they can within reasonable limits, and hope that the effects are minimal. But that doesn't mean that nothing will happen. After all, it has in the past. So "get a grip on yourself" and be prepared to eat crow if a major electrical system does go down.
