Choosing correct phone cable for a new house

My friend is having his house rebuilt. Before the drywall gets pu up, he wants to run phone wires. We are trying to figure out wha kind of cable to buy, but we have received conflicting advice

One person told us to use Category 5e cable with 8 conductors. H

said you don't use all 8 conductors, you just connect the ones tha you need. Someone else told us this will not work because we wil not be able to connect 8 conductor cable to the inside wall portio of a typical phone jack faceplate, which will have a 4 pin connector Can anyone offer their opinion?...Is 8 conductor cable really better Will I be able to connect this to the inside wall side of a typica phone jack faceplate?

An additional question that came up is...What is the differenc

between 'plenum' type cable and 'riser' type cable? Which should w get

If anyone could offer some insight or advice, I'd really appreciat

it

Thanks

If you wire a house with Cat5e you normally fit RJ45 face plates (eg the ones used for a network) and then you use an adaptor like this to connect a phone to it...

This particular adaptor is designed for UK phones...

I think for the USA you use RJ45 plug to RJ11 socket adaptor?

this is with nortamarican installations in mind, other countries have other equipment. for us here there are wall boxes available that have both phone (RJ11) and RJ45 connectors on the same faceplate. I would go for that. mixing phone service into cat5e cables will lead to a mess in later life. do you want to go from each box to a central point and distribute the service from there? or wire from box to box? things to keep in mind. but don't mix phone into cat54 cables and expect not to run into trouble. rw

That's what I'm planning for my house under construction. Multiple cat5e from a cabinet to all rooms (star topology). Then any socket can be either phone or LAN by making the right connection at the patch board in the cabinet and plugging in a simple adaptor in the room.

In practice I may use a DECT cordless phone system and hook up the base station to a Skype router...

That way any cordless phone in the house can make/answer Skype or regular POTS calls.

I'd also use cat5e cable. I find the quality to be a lot better than the currently abailable "telephone cable". Having 4 twisted pairs also allows you to swap out a bad pair, have multiple line options, run ethernet or have a dedicated DSL pair from the service head. Richard
