I have an AC Adapter that lets you select voltage from 3-12 in 1.5 increments. The problem is some of my devices (actually, the adapter tha came with them) call for 5 volts. Can I safely use 4.5 or 6? I generally travel with 3 or 4 original AC Adapters and am trying to carry only 1.
Most "5 volt" devices will work on 4.5 volts. If the device runs from alkaline batteries, it either uses 3 (4.5 volts) or 4 (6 volts). If the device has a rechargeable battery, you probably should use the original adapter/charger.

Depends on what the device is that needs 5VDC. If it's a device that has TTL logic chips, then the chips are good only down to 4.75VDC. If it's a different logic family, it might tolerate lower voltages. And another point that you have to adrdress is how much curent the adapter can supply, and how well regulated it is, i.e. does the voltage drop under heavy load. So maybe you could get some good info from the thread I started a week or so ago about dropping 6V down to 5V.
