Probably not without the Internet, either. These days most information that has found its way to print is too old to use. However it's still handy to have a few reference books around like the Doulos Golden reference guide to Verilog. Really your bookshelf reflects the type of designs you're most likely to do. My "wouldn't work without" books may be of no value to someone else.
If you are going to write RTL in VHDL, I recommend Peter Ashenden's "Th Designer's Guide to VHDL", 2nd editiion, ISBN 1-55860-674-2.
