APU (xilinx PPC) is it a soft core ?

Hi all, I have a simple question - is the APU controller is part of the FPGA/ PPC silicon or is it a soft-core that is added only when used ? Thanks, Mordehay.

Mordehay,

It is hardware, part of the IBM PPC, designed for adding auxiliary processing capability to the processor.

It gets used with a "soft core" Floating Point Unit (FPU), for example.

The APU allows for faster transfers of data to and from CPU registers, and also transfers to and from memory. The APU has direct access to the instruction decoder, too.
