This application would suggest Linux, NetBSD or (if you have other requirements you didn't tell us about) Windows CE.

This is not an answerable question. The most popular embedded OS (in terms of units shipped) is no OS in the sense you mean it at all.

Most write their own OS, not that we like too, but its the best workable solution.

does netbsd have the application like apt-get ?

i found that the pkg_tools such as pkg_add won't install dependent packages at the same time

are there any apt-get-like package management tools in netbsd?

thanks alot

Don't know about NetBSD, but OpenBSD's pkg_add certainly does install dependencies. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

Note: strictly speaking, neither OpenBSD nor NetBSD are RTOSs. However OpenBSD at least is sufficienctly efficient and low-latency to be a candidate for embedded use, IMO. (And the licensing terms are good.)

If you truly mean an embedded RTOS, then Quadros

has RTOS with USB and GUI. GUI supports many different input devices including touch screen.

Quadros is in top brands of MP3 players, Cell phones, etc. all of which have non conventional input, GUI and are indeed embedded.

Why is everyone saying "RTOS"? The OP didn't mention it anywhere.

The requirements suggest a POS terminal or multimedia appliance with no realtime requirements in the sense that would mandate an RTOS.

when i want to install something in pkgsrc/*

i just type "make install" in that specific directory

but it seems that no dependency consideration in the makefile

is there any way that can install all necessary programs in pkgsrc/* at the same time ?

thank you for your reply

that was my mistake that

pkg_add in netbsd indeed supports dependency checking and installing

thank you any way

as larwe say

i don't need a Real Time mechanism now

all what i what to do is play video on the touch screen

if in the future i need some one like this , i will consult you about RT issues

thanks

Agreed with larwe, where is the RT requirement coming from???

Sure you could write your own... if only you had the time! (doesn't loo like he needs a small 8/16-bit executive here)

what are you business requirements?

you could go the linux/bsd route: plenty of open-source solution for wha you're asking. However, if you've never developped under linux you migh be for a steep learning curve. Now, depending on your time to market an target volume, you should also look at WinCE (I believe it runs a ~$4/unit license); it seems appropriate for a low-volume multimedia/po app.
