Touchscreen LCD system - build vs. buy

I'm exploring options for a kiosk-type platform... the system will be a wireless (802.11b/g), touchscreen web browser in a low-profile chassis (i.e., embedded PC with an LCD). No external connections needed except power.

There's got to be turnkey systems that fit this profile, but the touchscreen seems to be a stumbling point. Any suggestions on sources for such systems? Or just the touchscreen LCD (say, 10-12")?

Why is it a stumbling block/point?

Very possibly, though I'm talking cost, not price.

We're working backwards from what this application's market will bear, so the budget has no grounding in reality. We've got to find a way to make it work; second choice is to change the business model to support thin margins on the hardware; last choice is to abandon the idea.

An excellent point of reference (and good looking units!) - so what

*should* the expectation be? Are we talking $1K, $2K, $5K each?

How much of your systems are you fabricating, or do you buy turnkey platforms?

We fabricate most of the system, except for the Geode CPU card. I believe most of the cost is in the CPU board and the TFT LCDs. We'd like to do an small STN unit so we can use cheaper screens, but of course, that requires different video controller chips!

If you check turnkey stuff from say, Advantech, you're looking at $1000+ list for those.

Now, all this stuff that I've been talking about has 200+Mhz processors. Perhaps going to lower-end systems (non-x86 of course) would work. I don't know enough about them to say.

I see your compamy is hiring, do you still have a job if you can't make this happen? But anyway all kidding aside, what volume are you looking at, We designed a custom pcb and interface for the back of an lcd with touchscreen, about $800 for 100 units. If your looking at Advantech, forget it, they are retail and very over priced. P.S. say hi to Paul.
