I like the reflected LED idea, but rather than flash a single LED,
why not arrange a smarter icon scheme. That saves any special decoder.
This could be as simple as a kids watch with just the right illumination
to merge into the image, or how about a phosphor analog watch
illuminated with a BLUE led, to get the watch arms to 'hang in space'.
  Mirroring would be a challenge....

You mean, a HUD on the window in front of the camera :) That would
interfere with the camera's automatic exposure and possibly autofocus
too, methinks. The LED solution would be a onetime or periodic event,
it wouldn't have to be in focus because just the presence or absence
of a color patch at frame [n] would be enough to sync it to a known
point in the vehicle log.

The reflector for the lamp that illuminates external objects has a
separate window, so it can't spill light onto the back of the camera
window. In the LED-flashing scenario the camera would be set back from
its window a little, and the LED would be out of direct view, but
aimed at the top edge of the window. Nothing else would be spilling
light into that area, so unwanted internal reflections wouldn't be a
problem.

FM data stripe on the audio track still looks like the way to go,
though.
