is there any initiative regarding the standardization of embedded devices? Wouldn't it be pretty fancy to have an XML document like this?

if all the resources of the device were described by a standard XML document it would be really easy to configure and interact with the device. A client application running on a PC could retrieve the document, build an HTML representation of the device and let the user interact with the device.
